The Brief
Following structural changes, this team included quite a number of people that had not worked together. Furthermore, they worked nationally and rarely spent non-work time together. The event had to incorporate a business meeting, evening meal and activities the following day. Central to the client's objectives was to create a 'getting away from it' feel.
The Solution
We developed a medieval theme which enabled us to link the venue, activities and mealtime entertainment as well as create a more visually rewarding environment for the business meeting.
We chose Peckforton Castle - the only fully intact medieval style castle in Britain. It overlooks the gorgeous Cheshire plains but is also easily accessible by good road links.
The business meeting took place in a large chamber within the main tower.
After meeting in the dungeon bar for a drink, the evening meal took the form of a medieval banquet, held in the fully dressed Great Hall. As well as a themed menu (washed down with mead) there were performing jesters, fools and a couple of wenches to help keep everyone well watered! Between courses and after the meal, the group enjoyed participating in acts and performances put on by the troupe.
The following day, the group task was to 'Escape The Castle'. This started with them having to break out of the inner sanctum, by working their way, blindfolded, through a series of criss-crossing ropes. They then had to abseil their way over the castle walls and into the surrounding countryside. Next was a test of hand-eye coordination through an archery competition. They had to burst balloons on the targets to reveal clues for the final challenge - orienteering through the woods surrounding the castle to seek out a vantage point that took in views as far as the Welsh mountains!
The 2 days were rounded off with a hog-roast back within the castle walls.
The Challenge
Although there are many castles in Britain, finding a genuine one (not a country house with a turret!) with sufficient accommodation of a quality standard, proved very difficult! Fortunately, we laugh in the face of difficulty!
