As we come to the end of the four day weekend commemorating the Queen’s Jubilee, we can look back on a truly memorable celebration. There were the celebrations that the Queen attended in person, such as the amazing concert on Monday night and the flotilla lead by the Royal Barge on the Thames, but there were thousands of local events too – local people wanting to mark the occasion with fayres, street parties and community events.
Like every great event, the high levels of engagement with those celebrating led to huge success. Whether you are a Royalist or not, the weekend had something for everyone.This was not just a celebration of Royalty, but a celebration of the best of British, and offered celebrations that only Britain could deliver. The pomp and circumstance that international visitors expect from Britain – mounted guards escorting the Queen andColdstream Guards in their bearskin hats are uniquely British and this was something to celebrate.
Throughout the weekend’s celebrations, there was a great mix of recognising the best of British but also looking to the future – a concert with Shirley Bassey and JLS on the same bill demonstrates this, and helps to engage the young and not so young together.
And of course, there was also the anticipation of more celebrations to come! Research has shown that excitement nationwide for the Olympics increased over the Jubilee weekend, as people had the opportunity to feel proud to be part of Britain.
And that is what is important to remember about the Jubilee celebrations. They were such a success because they didn’t just celebrate the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee,they celebrated all that is great about Britain as a brand – the history, the spectacle, the exciting vision of the future, and yes, even our unpredictable weather!
