Karl Goes Back to College!

Last week I had the privilege of being asked to deliver a talk to 2nd year students on the Event Management Course at Manchester College. I’d been introduced to the Course Tutor, Janine Priest by a good friend and business coach, Jeremy Bassett. Apparently they were looking for someone from the industry who had started their own events agency and who would be able to discuss the processes they had been through when establishing their business: objective setting, strategy development and delivery, growth management…
Ahem…I’m sorry? The what?
I hope it wasn’t a disappointment for them to hear that the first thing you need to do is find a customer. Ideally a few but one will do. Secondly you need to deliver a job that exceeds expectations. Treat the job as if your life depended on it.If you’ve done that, chances are they’ll put something else your way. Then if you’ve earned the right, they’ll recommend you to someone else; a colleague, a friend in another company, a family member...
Course content is obviously really important for any subject matter but to really stand out within your industry so is your work ethic. You will not be able to thrive within a service industry without understanding the nature of client service, cultivating an obscene attention to detail and striving for excellence in every proposal and project that you deliver. These are the perennial cornerstones upon which really competent event organisers are created.
I’m not sure if this is exactly what the students were expecting to hear but following the session, I was pleased to be asked to join the Advisory Panel on course content.Hmmm… looks like I’m going to have to do some objective setting after all.
